Glasgow Rose

Glasgow Rose

Penny rugs are made from felted wool.  Wool fabric will shrink and fluff when agitated in hot, then cold water.  Felted wool stays together and doesn't shred.  Cut the wool according to the pattern.  Pieces are stitched using perle cotton or embroidery floss.  A blanket stitch is often used to applique the shapes.

The term "Penny Rug" came from using a large penny years ago to trace and make a round shape.

Finished Size: 36" by 14" or 91cm by 36cm.  Included in the pattern are the list of supplies, wool requirements, stitches used, instructions and tips.

This pattern comes from the "Arts & Crafts" movement of the early 1900s. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Glasgow, Scotland, was a front-runner in design.  This stylized Rose is a rendition of one of his famous designs.
