Next Steps in 3-Dimensional Needle-Felt Sculptures

Saturday, Feb. 23rd, 9:30 to 3:30pm at Legacy Studio

This workshop is designed for people who have some 3-dimensional needle-felt experience and want to learn new techniques, and expand their creative and technical ability.

We'll be discussing:

  • the basics of using the needles effectively and efficiently - a quick refresher
  • building and integrating basic wire armatures (frameworks) into felt sculptures - this greatly expands your ability to create more complex, self-supporting structures
  • creating a solid internal core structure - this will help you to efficiently create firm sculptures
  • how to let color and the natural properties of wool take you in new, creative directions
  • using embellishments like locks, beads and threads to create unique personalities

We'll start with working on a funky bird (see photo).  These fellas have an external/internal armature and are an excellent way to start working with basic armatures while being creative.  We'll be building a solid internal core around an armature.  Then we'll cover it with colored wool, experimenting with soft sculpting and adding embellishments to create a unique bird.  I'll bring examples to get your creative ideas going.  In the second half, we'll work on a creative sculpture with an internal armature - this will give you an opportunity to learn how to wrap wool around thin appendages and experiment with different techniques.

Workshop Instructor: Fay Hodson

Fay has been needle-felting for 15 years and has had her work in a variety of shows and sales.  She is a member of the Alberta Craft Councel, Felt:Feutre, Sheep Creek Weavers and the Bragg Creek Artisans.  She is currently enrolled in the BFA program at Alberta College of Art and Design.  To see some of her needle-felt pieces, check out her website.

Materials and Tools: The wool, wire and yarn that you will need are included in the class fee.  You may bring your own felting needles and foam block or purchase them at the start of the class (foam block $5.95 and two medium needles $2.50).

Other tools to bring: notebook and pen, scissors, and masking tape.  Medium and/or small wire cutters and pliers if you have them.  I'll bring some to share.  We will be working with wire, so safety glasses are recommended.

Optional supplies - beads, buttons, wool locks, crafting wire, strong yarn (synthetic is fine) and whatever strikes your fancy.

Additional supplies for this class are available at Legacy Studio

Lunch: We'll be taking a short lunch break - please pack a lunch and drink

Skill Level: Intermediate - completion of the Needle-felt Creatures Class or have made some needle-felt sculptures and are comfortable using the needles.

Note that this craft involves working with sharp needles and is intended for adults.  Children over twelve may register if accompanied by an adult.
