Wet-Felted Landscapes

9:30 to 3:00 pm at Legacy Studio

Workshop: $75 Kit Fee: $10

This workshop is designed for people who wish to learn about using different coloured wool and fibre to create felt pictures. The emphasis will be on learning techniques that you will be able to explore further if you choose to do more wet-felting. We will be discussing basic “laying-out” techniques – no previous wet-felting experience is necessary, although it would be helpful.

Content includes:

  • Review of the basic steps of making felt from wool tops or batting
  • Using pre-felt as a base for a landscape and discussing other options for making the base
  • Laying out a landscape and “painting” with wool using blending and overlaying techniques
  • Experimenting with different fibres and seeing how they provide surface detail
  • Discussing needle-felting and stitching options and experimenting with them as time allows
  • Discussing ways that your finished product can be supported and displayed

We’ll start with making a felt “sampler” from scratch which will enable us to work on some basic techniques before starting the main project. Next we will create a landscape on pre-felt (see photo). We’ll follow the basic design in the photo, although experienced felters may choose to be more adventurous if they wish. I will bring along some examples of other completed works and we will talk about techniques that you may want to try on your own and how to display or use your finished project.

Workshop instructor: Fay Hodson

Fay has been wet and needle-felting for 15 years and has had her work in a variety of shows and sales. She is a member of the Alberta Craft Council, Felt:feutre, Sheep Creek Weavers and the Bragg Creek Artisans. She is currently enrolled in the BFA program at the Alberta College of Art and Design. To see some of her felt pieces, check out her web-site (towards the bottom of the page)

Materials and Tools The pre-felted wool, wool tops, and fibres (e.g. bamboo, silk, banana) that you need will be supplied for a kit fee of $10. We’ll email those who register a detailed list of other items for you to bring.
