“Hooked Skies” – Skies are fascinating! We talk about the science behind them, such as how and why light is refracted in the atmosphere. We use our understanding of different cloud formations—including fair-weather cirrus, fluffy cumulus, and stormy cumulonimbus—to predict the weather. Space enthusiasts marvel at new celestial discoveries. We also pay attention to how skies impact our well-being, both individually and collectively. A bright blue sky fills us with happiness, giving us the confidence to proceed with our planned outdoor activities for the day. Looking up at a vast, star-filled night sky creates a sense of awe, calmness, and perspective about the universe. Sometimes, skies tell personal, cultural, and historical stories. However, we fear dark, stormy skies and sudden, intense weather systems for what they may bring to our homes and communities. With their brilliant colors and ever-changing patterns, skies are also—quite simply—lovely to look at and contemplate! As such, they offer an infinite number of ways to hook them. And, if you don’t want to hook what you “see,” you can create an abstract sky.
