Margilan is a city in Uzbekistan where they raise silk worms and weave silk. The silk fabric is of different weights. Silk gauze is very popular for nuno felting and scarves. It is light-weight and airy with an open-weave so the wool permeates the fabric easily. Gauze is 3.0 momme silk. The Gauze has a more open weave than Excelsior. Excelsior is a 4.0 momme silk.
Margilan silk is extremely sheer and fine, but is especially known for it’s gorgeous sheen. Dyes and paints easily with acid dyes. Good for light scarves, veils, shawls and layered clothing.
This fabric is sold by the meter. Gauze is 90 cm and Excelsior is 85cm in width.
